Benchmark Capital Invests $8 Million in Power Challenge, the Leading Online Sports Games Company
Menlo Park, Calif., London, Stockholm -- May 14, 2007 -- Benchmark Capital, a leading early-stage high-technology venture capital firm,
today announced an $8 million investment in online sports games publisher and developer, Power Challenge. The investment will be used
to fund development of new titles, enhance the quality of existing games and expand the company’s global infrastructure.
Power Challenge is the leading provider of sports-based multiplayer games played over the Internet. Its two principal games offerings,
Power Challenge (www.powerchallenge.com) and ManagerZone
(www.managerzone.com), attract the most users of any sports games on the Web,
and are currently adding more than 4,000 new players each day. These games use advanced technology to create superior images in full
screen 3D, which are easily accessible through a user’s Web browser. There is no need for time-consuming downloads or expensive consoles
– players simply join in from anywhere, anytime, and play for free.
Power Challenge allows users to create dedicated communities of fans playing together across the virtual world. Players create their own
teams and develop their skills as the team moves up in level. ManagerZone offers management games where tactics and strategy are paramount.
Players build their teams over time and work out the best strategies and maneuvers to take their clubs to victory. All games are free to
play, with premium add-on services available for more dedicated players.
Power Challenge was founded in 2004 by Johan Christenson, an Internet entrepreneur who previously created three successful companies in
the gaming industry. The company, which is headquartered in Karlskrona, Sweden, merged with ManagerZone in 2007 in order to strengthen
its position in the rapidly growing online gaming market. The Power Challenge team is determined to push the boundaries of the sports
gaming world by combining the quality of a PC-based game with the high-growth patterns of online social networking communities.
“By taking full advantage of the action and management aspects of sports, our games have become the ultimate destination for sports and
game fans alike. Web-based gaming is the future of the industry as it takes interaction between users to a new level,” said Johan
Christenson, chief executive officer of Power Challenge. “With Benchmark on board, we gain both the network and resources we need to be
a leading player in the Web-based sports world. We can now increase the pace of releasing new games, and enhance the experience for both
new and existing users.”
“Power Challenge presents a unique and exciting opportunity to change the way games are played over the Internet,” said Elie Wurtman,
general partner of Benchmark Capital Israel. “Johan and his team have created a sports entertainment experience that’s unmatched in the
gaming industry. Unlike the current genre of online sports games that appeal primarily to enthusiasts, Benchmark’s experience in the
gaming industry suggests that consumers want their digital entertainment to be engaging, life-like and easy to access. We believe Power
Challenge sets a new standard for the way sports entertainment is delivered and experienced, and as a result will attract a new generation
of consumers to the world of online gaming.”
“We believe this market will continue to grow, and multi-player Web-gaming communities will play a primary role in this growth,” added
Johan Brenner, general partner of Benchmark Capital Europe. “Power Challenge has the foundation for great success, and together we form a
team that can be a major force in this space.”
